How to Recruit NPCs in Delverium
Valid rooms first: walls, door, bed, and a light source — then the shop opens.
Recruiting in Delverium is a housing problem, not a gacha pull. You meet people in the overworld, they ask for a home, and they move in when you can point at a valid room. This page is the checklist. Steam Early Access is scheduled for September 22, 2026 (the storefront may show September 21). The demo has been on Steam since February 2025. We are not going to invent friendship hearts, hidden approval stats, or a twenty-name waitlist.
Job-by-job shops live on NPC roles. The parent map is the NPCs hub. Building pieces come from crafting. If you still punch trees with no walls, start at getting started.
The room that actually counts
Preview reports (and first-hour write-ups) repeat the same four parts:
- Walls that close a space. An open fence ring is a pen, not a bedroom.
- A door so the room reads as a house, not a trap.
- A bed — the spare bed is the invitation. Your own bed is for your spawn; they want theirs.
- A light source so the room is not a dark box.
Once those four are true, the NPC can live in the settlement, set up shop, and offer trades plus talk. If they still say they need a home, the room is invalid: missing lamp, missing door, bed already claimed, or a gap in the wall. Fix the architecture before you assume the game is bugged.
Demo footage often shows newcomers asking for something in the neighborhood of a compact enclosed room. Exact tile counts can change during Early Access, so this wiki will not freeze a fake “must be 5×5” rule as law. Build a clearly enclosed bedroom with the four parts, then talk to them again.
Where you find people
They are already in the world. You do not craft a villager at a desk. Playthroughs introduce a gatherer/forager, an agronomist, a blacksmith, and a merchant as you walk plains, forests, and roads. Order is seed-dependent. Chase the one whose shop you need, but build the room before you drag them across the map so the invite line has somewhere to land.
Do not wait for a quest log to spawn a fifth mystery identity. The reported set is four jobs. If Sagestone Games adds more during Early Access, recruiting will still be “spare valid room + talk.” Calendar context is on the Early Access page.
What changes after they move in
- Shops. Buy seeds, food, livestock, materials, or gear depending on the job (roles breaks that down).
- Dialogue. Hints, farming reminders, lore crumbs. The agronomist in previews even restates the till-seed-water loop and the “pen plus trough” rule.
- Presence. Developer comments say NPCs can attack nearby threats. That is a bonus, not a reason to skip walls around your own bed.
- Settlement gravity. Your house becomes a place people return to. Chests, crafting stations, and the farm should sit next to those rooms so shopping is not a hike.
They do not currently replace you as automatic farmers or miners. If you want crops, you still hoe and water. If you want ore, you still take a pickaxe into dungeons.
Co-op recruiting without stepping on each other
Delverium lets you mix 4-player split-screen and 8-player online co-op. There is no official dedicated server; the host world holds every bed. Practical rules that keep a lobby sane:
- Call the next room out loud (“lamp is in, bed is free”) so two people do not stuff two beds in one closet.
- Build spare rooms before a friend invites someone, especially if drop-in players will arrive mid-session.
- Put doors on interior rooms so pathing stays obvious.
- Keep a chest of extra torches and beds next to the workbench; recruiting is a furniture problem as much as a social one.
- If you need the village to stay online when the host sleeps, that is a community hosting question, not an in-game landlord tool.
A first-hour sequence that works
- Chop wood, pick stone, craft walls, a door, a bed, and a light for you.
- Duplicate that room. The second bed is the product.
- Talk to the first NPC you meet. If they ask for a home, stand in the spare room and finish the invite.
- Sell junk, buy what their job is for (seeds from a gatherer, a tool lead from a blacksmith, chicks from an agronomist).
- Only then start a second spare room. One happy tenant beats three empty frames.
Livestock has its own “room”: an enclosure of fence, gate, and water trough. That is not an NPC bedroom. Do not put a villager bed in a sheep pen and expect a shop. Animals are ranked on the farming tier list and explained in the farming guide.
Mistakes that look like bugs
- No light. A windowless box without a torch or lamp fails the preview checklist.
- Bed already yours. Sleeping in the only bed means there is no spare.
- Missing door. Walls with a hole are not the same as a door tile.
- Recruiting before furniture. Walking an NPC home to an empty plot wastes the trip.
- Eight players, one room. The first invite wins; everyone else needs lumber.
None of those require a secret item ID. They require a closed, lit bedroom.
Feedback, not a fake roadmap
Sagestone has said NPC features are limited and can expand based on demand. There is no confirmed Trello of upcoming villagers. Post room-requirement confusion on Steam Discussions or Discord — links are on the links hub. This unofficial wiki will update the checklist when the official rule changes, not when a rumor needs a name.
Print the four-part room in your head so you can shout it in co-op: walls, door, bed, light. If the invite still fails, you are missing one of those four, not a hidden charm stat. When Early Access adds a new job, build another spare room first; the talk will have somewhere to go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Delverium questions.
What makes a valid NPC room?
Walls, a door, a bed, and a light source. After that they can live in the settlement and offer trades and dialogue. If they still ask for a home, one of those four is missing or the bed is already claimed.
Do I have to finish a quest to recruit someone?
Previews show overworld NPCs asking for a spare room, then moving in. You meet them by exploring, not by rolling a banner. See NPC roles for the four reported jobs.
Can two players recruit the same NPC in co-op?
One world, one tenant per invite. Build extra rooms if split-screen or online friends will each bring someone home. The host save holds the village; there is no official dedicated server.
Is a livestock pen the same as an NPC room?
No. Animals need fence, gate, and a water trough. Villagers need a closed, lit bedroom. Putting a bed in a sheep pen does not open a shop.
Will more NPCs be added in Early Access?
Sagestone Games has said NPC features can expand. Steam Early Access is scheduled for September 22, 2026. This page will not invent extra names while only four jobs are consistently reported.
Where should I put the rooms?
Next to your bed, chests, and crafting stations so shopping is not a hike. Leave space for a farm on the sunny side; the agronomist will push you toward pens anyway.
